Types of questions in German

July 5, 2025

In German, there are several types of questions: yes/no questions (Ja/Nein-Fragen), wh-questions (W-Fragen), alternative questions (Alternativfragen), and tag questions (Bestätigungsfragen). Let’s take a closer look at them.
Yes/No Questions (Ja/Nein-Fragen)
Yes/no questions require an answer of “yes” or “no.” They begin with the verb, which comes first in the sentence.
Structure:
Verb + subject + the rest of the sentence?
Examples:
Hast du Zeit? - Do you have time?
Kommt er heute? - Is he coming today?
Magst du Kaffee? - Do you like coffee?
Wh-Questions (W-Fragen)
These questions begin with question words (W-Wörter) that ask for specific information.
Structure:
Question word (W-Wort) + verb + subject + the rest of the sentence?
Examples:
Wie heißt du? - What’s your name?
Wo wohnst du? - Where do you live?
Wann beginnt der Kurs? - When does the course start?
Warum lernst du Deutsch? - Why are you learning German?
Alternative Questions (Alternativfragen)
Alternative questions offer a choice between two or more options. They are structured like yes/no questions but include “oder” (or) to present alternatives.
Structure:
Verb + subject + rest of the sentence + oder + alternative?
Examples:
• Trinkst du Tee oder Kaffee? - Do you drink tea or coffee?
• Fahren wir nach Berlin oder nach München? - Are we going to Berlin or Munich?
• Kommt er heute oder morgen? - Is he coming today or tomorrow?
Tag Questions (Bestätigungsfragen)
These questions are used to confirm information and are equivalent to English tags like “isn’t it?” or “right?”. They are formed as statements with “nicht wahr?” or “oder?” added at the end.
Examples:
• Du bist müde, nicht wahr? - You’re tired, aren’t you?
• Er kommt heute, oder? - He’s coming today, right?
• Du hast das verstanden, nicht wahr? - You understood that, didn’t you?
Each type of question plays a role in communication, helping to clarify information, request confirmation, or offer a choice - all of which make understanding easier between speakers. Knowing how to form and when to use different types of questions is an important part of mastering the German language.
