Most verbs in German have a case government or preposition requirement, meaning they need a specific case or preposition to follow them.
There are verbs governed by the accusative case (Akkusativ), including verbs like kennenlernen+Akk. (to get to know), nehmen+Akk. (to take), abholen+Akk. (to pick up), anrufen+Akk. (to call) and others.
Rufst du mich morgen an? - Will you call me tomorrow?
Ich hole dich nach der Schule ab. - I will pick you up after school.
There are also verbs governed by the dative case (Dativ): helfen+Dat. (to help), schenken+Dat. (to present), gefallen+Dat. (to please), passen+Dat. (to fit) and others.
Anna, hilf deinem Bruder! - Anna, help your brother!
Some verbs require a specific preposition (or prepositions), which, in turn, requires the dative or accusative case.
sich freuen+auf/über+Akk. - to look forward to
Freust du dich auf die Winterferien? - Are you looking forward to the winter holidays?
träumen+von+Dat. - to dream of something
Klaus träumt von einem neuen Handy. - Klaus dreams of a new phone.
